History – the most important stages

1465 · A monastery founded by the Eptingen von Pratteln family stands on the site of today’s hotel (first mention).

1502 · First mentioned as Hofgut "Schauenburg", belonging to the Schauenburg estate. Owned by the city of Liestal.

1643 · Acquired by alderman and town clerk Hans Jakob Keller from Liestal. Opening of the old spa in 1644, fed by a spring with water containing nitrate-rich chalky soil. Repeated changes of ownership.

1686 · Lieutenant-colonel Felix Platter acquires the spa from his mother Helena Platter, who has had a new spa building constructed.

1691 · A new spa building is opened at the Hofgut Neu-Schauenburg, rivalling the Schauenburg Spa. However it proves an economic failure.

1742 · Acquired by Johann Rudolf Beck, a citizen of Basel. He allows the spa to deteriorate so that in 1767 it is bought at auction by the Liestal Orphanage.

1777 · Further changes of ownership.

1848 · Benedikt Flury expands the establishment to a saline and mineral spa. He leaves a flourishing business to his eldest son.

1875 · Emil Flury adds a floor to the spa building and replaces the veranda on the south gable by a wing with a hall.

ca. 1900 · The health establishment reaches a highpoint: extensive gardens and forest-like orchards of cherry trees, as well as ponds and paths surround the Schauenburg Spa. Debts then accumulate.

1906 · Rudolf Flury takes over the Schauenburg Saline Spa.
In World War II the rear rooms of the hotel are used by the army as troop quarters. From 1942 to 1944 the hotel serves as accommodation for Jewish emigrants. These worked on improvements to the link road between Liestal and Arlesheim via Bad Schauenburg. After the war, Flury takes the business to new heights and builds a 300 m2 swimming pool, at that time a sightseeing attraction.

1945 · Martha Flury takes over the spa and renovates the buildings.

1958 · End of the spa business. Purchase by J. R. Geigy AG. Gradual conversion to a modern recreation and seminar hotel.

1970 · Merger between CIBA and J. R. Geigy. Key decision made at Bad Schauenburg in 1969.

1979 · Extensive renovations.

1983 · Alfred Häring, today’s hotelier, becomes leaseholder of the hotel.

1996 · The former stables are converted into a modern conference centre.

2004/5 · Exterior renovation of entire main building.

2005–7 · Interior renovation (kitchen, hotel wing, corridors, Schauenburgersaal, Basel Stübli).
